Piers Alsop British , b. 1984

Piers Alsop is a British painter living and working in London. He completed his BA in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts in 2007. Following a decade spent working in film, Alsop returned to painting in 2018 with renewed intent and an added appreciation for the performative impact of fiction. And so, smooth linen surfaces and the wider warp and weft of jute canvas serves as the theatrical backdrop to his staged sets that sit as if awaiting activation. Imbued with a dark humour and the social realism typified by British kitchen sink dramas - as well as evidence of a paternal, architectural influence - Alsop's paintings depict deserted suburban and civic scenes, invariably punctuated by solitary, anonymised figures ready to enact an imminent, implied narrative. Previously stating 'I feel like more of a spectator than the subject', Alsop's sentimental vignettes provide an astute observation on everyday existence, while embracing the ambiguities and abstractions that arise as a result of prolonged, profound contemplation.
