Simon Linington ISLE OF WIGHT, b. 1983

Nearly every child growing up on the Isle of Wight, UK, will visit the colourful cliffs at Alum Bay and fill a glass tube or bottle with sand. It’s one of the first school trips Linington can remember, and a memory he shares with many.

Growing up with these objects made a lasting impression, and ever since, material and place have been inseparable for the artist.

In 2020, inspired by these souvenirs, he started a sculptural series which uses pigment, or natural clay, earth, rock and sand. Many of these sculptures are site-specific and are seen in China, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Spain.
