James Evans' practice is largely split between painting and writing. These two focuses don't explicitly interact, but they do explore similar conceptual terrain and continually inform one another. He works primarily with mesh screen, mixing a putty together that he shapes into a workable surface. The screen functions as an intermediary; a material defined by negative space. The paintings veer from figurative to abstract, the subject matter pulling largely from the artist's own writing or from books he reads. The supports Evans builds and the way in which they interact with the room become just as critical as the painted surface.
James Evans is an artist and writer from New York, currently living in London while he pursues his MFA at Goldsmiths. James grew up in Colorado and studied writing at the University of Colorado at Boulder before relocating to New York. He has shown in solo (New York- GR Gallery) and group shows (Brigitte Mulholland Paris, The Hole) within the US and internationally.
